Fuel Bowser Regulations

We always make sure that all of our portable bowsers are up to regulations according to the newly updated Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR) requirements. This is to ensure that our fuel equipment is not only safe but also compliant. In 2004, red diesel (gas oil) and white diesel (derv) were classified by the Government as a combustible and flammable material.

The industry was allowed a period of 15 years by the department of transportation as an exemption period in which to switch to compliant intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC’s) now this period is over and all boswers must conform to the current standards.

What does this mean?

This means that any fuel bowser transporting fuel on a public road or across public spaces but be officially classified as an IBS this means:

  • The tank must be bunded

  • Your bowser must be checked at least every 30 moths for external wear and be pressure tested and internally inspected every 5 years

  • Your tank must be double-skinned

  • Road-worthiness must be logged and your documentation kept somewhere safe

  • It must have the UN packaging symbol (either as a sticker or stamped into the bowser itself) and its identifying IBC code

Due to the Department of Transportation being able to ask for documentation as to the specific type of IBC, it is also worthwhile checking if your portable fuel bowsers are up to regulation. If your bowser is starting to show its age and you are unsure whether it's up to IBC regulations, don't worry. We have a wide range of bowsers to choose from, ranging from towable to static, which are compliant with all regulatory requirements and bodies.

Documentation

If your bowser has been found to meet all the above conditions, then it can be classed as an IBC. You will get documentation which tells you the specific type of IBC and its status. This should be kept safe and it is recommended that it be kept with any service certifications.
